Level 2 Drought Alert Condition
Landscape Management
PACIFIC PROPERTIES SERVICE would like to bring to your attention the rapidly approaching mandatory water restrictions for your community. Beginning June 1, 2009, the City of San Diego will be moving to a Level 2 – Drought Alert Condition that includes mandatory water use restrictions for Water Department customers. It will be PPS’s policy to incorporate landscape and irrigation practices that will ensure your community will meet the requirements of these new mandatory water conservation measures. It is our hope for your community that we can meet these requirements without forfeiting your landscaped areas health and aesthetic value however there is no assurance to this end.
PPS is taking a proactive approach if the water allocation method becomes necessary to meet the needs of San Diego’s water crisis by establishing a water usage baseline for your community. Currently we are collecting water usage data from the city’s water department for the years of 2006 – Present. This information will become very useful if or when your community is asked to reduce water consumption by a specific percentage of usage.
The mandatory water use restrictions included with the Level 2 Drought Alert Condition will affect all City Water Department customers. Under Level 2, all voluntary conservation practices currently recommended by the City become mandatory. In addition to a host of specific requirements spelled out in the Emergency Water Regulations, Water Department customers will be required to:
- Water lawns and landscape only between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m.
- Water only three times a week from June through October.
- Know their watering days:
- Homes with odd-numbered addresses can water: Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday
- Homes with even-numbered addresses can water: Saturday, Monday & Wednesday
- Apartments, Condos and Businesses can water: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
- Standard lawn sprinklers can water: Only 10 minutes.
- When taking their car to a car wash, use only those that recycle their water.
- Wash their cars at home between 6 p.m. & 10 a.m. only, and use a bucket and a hose with a shut-off nozzle.
PPS would like to give emphasis to how major these restrictions are by providing an example of the water requirements for a typical Fescue grass area during the summer months in San Diego. Referring to the table below, you can see the water requirements of the turf is up to 135 minutes per week and that the Level 2 drought restrictions are a maximum of 30 minutes per week for irrigation systems not operated by a weather based control system. This restriction is less than 80% of what the turf’s watering requirements is to maintain the turf’s health and appearance.
